Breaking News: Empire Avenue Adds Influencer Scores

As you have likely seen by now, Empire Avenue has added Influencer Scores to the profile pages on the site.   By clicking on one of the scores, you can get a detailed explanation of these numbers.  In short, the scores are numbers out of 100 based on activity, audience size and audience engagement.  Currently, the scores are in beta and the algorithms used to calculate the scores can be expected to change.  Furthermore, Blog scores have not been added yet.  (You can guess how thrilled I was about that news ;-)  The next scores provide the clearest insight into the EA market makers yet.

Next, implications for building influence.   Continue reading

Are You Really a Hero?

I once heard a great line that I make a point of remembering all the time.

“Everyone is the hero of their own story.”

In case you don’t get it, it means (except for those with real self-esteem issues) very few people go around thinking, ‘You know, I am a jerk. I treat other people really lousy.’  When differences occur between people, we tend to think, ‘I am in the right, and the other person is in the wrong.’  I am reminded of this from my experiences growing up in the restaurant business.  You see some doozy people waiting table, but then, I would be in some store, doing something boneheaded, and in a moment of insight, I would realize, I am being one of those customers.

Next, life in the mirror.   Continue reading

Blog Influence: But, But, I Can’t Write

With social media and personal blogging exploding in to a busier segment of the online world with each passing day, a number of people are starting join in who previously would never have considered writing on a regular basis. Maybe friends have started blogging, or you’ve decided you want to make your voice heard online. Whatever your reasons, you’ve set up a blog but you simply don’t know quite what to do with it. And at the same time, it seems like such a silly thing to have trouble with that you don’t even know where to turn for help.

Next, just be yourself.   Continue reading

A Great Beginning

The Empire Building Network is a month old today. Okay, truth be told, EBN isn’t a month old, it was just Empire Building until recently when I realized that search engine optimization really called for another word (darned Empire State Building).  I am glad now that I had to get a .net URL because I couldn’t get .com.  Actually, Empire Building is older than a month because I first had the blog on Tumblr which we quickly outgrew.  And then I really just now realized that even here, the site is older than a month.  I was going by Google Analytics, but I didn’t hook that up for days.  The first post was on June 9th.  So, I guess the site has lots of birthdays.

Next, impressive numbers.   Continue reading

Adding a last.fm Feed

last.fm is a great service for finding music you normally wouldn’t listen to, but that suits your musical tastes. I have received a whole bunch of questions on how one can add their “Recently Played” songs to Empire Avenue. Well I am writing this to give you a step by step answer. I cannot take credit for figuring this out. I am throwing this post together quickly due to high demand and I can’t seem to find the message from the person who let me in on this info sometime last week. If this person is you, please DM me on Twitter and I’ll gladly give you the shoutout here!

Next: Step-by-step instructions.   Continue reading

What Business Are We In?

“What Business Are We In?”

These words were asked by Sharyl Sandberg when she was hired as the COO of Facebook in March 2008. These are the words in the new book The Facebook Effect, which I highly recommend. The deeper I got into this read, the more I wanted to write a post about the business aspect of Empire Avenue. I wasn’t sure how to do it until Elle Thibeau really got me thinking with her post on Wednesday. Her provocative argument on whether the current share upgrade system makes sense got me thinking…. Why does Empire Avenue Exist? What busines are they in? Up until this point its been a fun game to meet people and build some traffic to your personal online profiles. However, I think EA has some disruptive things planned in its near future.

Next: Setting their sights high.   Continue reading
